For far too long, anti-immigrant organizations dominated the conversation with their distorted and dishonest claims about immigrants. Their voices --amplified by CNN’s Lou Dobbs-- call for nothing less than a mass deportation of 12 million people, a Berlin-style wall all along the US-Mexico border, and denial of birthright citizenship to U.S-born babies.
Using fear and misinformation about immigrants, Lou Dobbs --our modern day Joseph Goebbels-- is turning America against itself. The result, hate crimes against Latinos are now on the rise. A new report by the Anti-Defamation League documents the growing wave of hate spreading across America now targeting immigrants. The report notes Hal Turner, a New Jersey talk show host who last year called for “killing illegal aliens as they cross into the U.S.” Today in Texas, two white teenagers were arrested for severely beating and sodomizing a 16-year-old Hispanic boy. Indeed, the actions of anti-immigrants are starting to match their hateful rhetoric.
Now is the time for all people of conscience to stand up and say: Ya Basta - Immigrants are Not criminals - Immigrants are Not invaders - Immigrants are Not terrorists. Immigrants ARE America and we must stand up to defend America from the hate-driven, anti-immigrant movement.
